Burnt.ToastWe are happy to welcome New York Times bestselling author Kathleen Flinn to the Civic Center Library to discuss her 2015 Michigan Notable Book Burnt Toast Makes You Sing Good: A Memoir of Food & Love from an American Midwest Family. A multi-generational account of her childhood in Michigan, Burnt Toast Makes You Sing Good has been called “a warm, quietly poignant treat” by Kirkus. It also includes recipes for some of the Midwest dishes she enjoyed as a child. Please join us for this chance to meet Kathleen Flinn!

Polish.Doctor.Nazi.CampsAuthor Barbara Rylko-Bauer will be joining us to discuss her 2015 Michigan Notable book A Polish Doctor in the Nazi Camps:  My Mother’s Memories of Imprisonment, Immigration and a Life Remade. 

Rylko-Bauer’s mother endured 3 Nazi concentration camps as a prisoner-doctor during World War II.  She then struggled to rebuild her life, first as a refugee doctor in Germany and later as an immigrant to the U.S.  Rylko-Bauer has produced a fascinating narrative that, not only tells her mother’s story, but also demonstrates how powerful historical forces impact individual lives.  Her writing is enriched with personal photographs, letters, archival documents and maps that combine to help us better understand World War II, the Holocaust and the struggle of immigrants in the aftermath of these tragic events.
