What tricks can help you stay healthy over the holidays? Holidays can be a hard time to stay active and eat healthy. This fun-filled class will teach you some simple tips and tricks to stay healthy during holiday parties and events. This includes teaching you some small recipe substitutions for your favorite dishes and how to avoid mindless eating at the buffets and snack bowls.

This program will be held via Zoom. Registration is required and runs October 11 – November 15; Zoom login information will be sent to you upon registration.  Register online or by calling 586-353-0580.

Zoom Storytime

September 10 – November 19, 2021

Children ages 2-5 are invited to an interactive storytime on Zoom. If you can’t make it on Fridays, a recorded version will be emailed to you. A weekly craft is included for each child that is registered. New attendees will receive storytime props when they pick-up their first craft. Register by calling 586.751.0770 or online.

Pollinator’s Garden with Bees in the D

Pollinators are responsible for helping over 80% of the world’s flowering plants to reproduce. Without them, humans and wildlife wouldn’t have much to eat or look at! Join Brian, one of the founders of Bees in the D, to learn how to grow plants in your yard and garden that help benefit pollinators.

Bees in the D is a Detroit nonprofit organization dedicated to educating about the importance of pollinators and the conservation of honeybees while building a network of urban honeybee hives throughout Detroit, Southeast Michigan, and internationally in Canada.

“Yooper Talk” with Michigan Author Kathryn Remlinger, Ph.D.

Learn how dialect, place, and identity are connected, and in particular, how sounding like a Yooper and what it means to be a Yooper are inextricably linked. Michigan author Kathryn Remlinger, Ph.D., of Grand Valley State University, will give insight into the intriguing history of how Michigan’s Upper Peninsula developed its colorful and culturally distinctive Yooper dialect and identity.

See how this connection has developed over time and is a result of economics, such as the tourism industry, our beliefs about who is and who is not a “real” Yooper, and our ideas about what a Yooper should sound like. She will show many examples collected over the past 19 years, including tourist souvenirs, signs in public spaces, movies, and social media.

Join us for a 2-hour class as we learn how to find information quickly and efficiently with the world’s most popular search engine! We’ll discuss the basics of Google searching, tips to make your searches more effective, as well as specialized Google products such as Google Images, Google Books, and Google Maps.
